Near, Far, Infinite Space
For 3-5 players. Begin with all players in the ideal/perfect place/setting in (very) near space to each other. With focus always on space/spatial awareness move in and out of near, far, infinite space with a clarity of which one you are in at every moment. |
Any map but Edinburgh
One artist chooses a map - of anywhere but Edinburgh. Artist selects a two-inch (5cm) square anywhere on the map. Read/interpret this area out loud. At least one other artist interprets what they hear. It ends when the reader has finished the 'journey' or interpretation of the square. |
Score for Architecture and Figures - bringing the space into view
For 4 or more dancers Place yourself in relationship to the architecture of the space. Notice the locations that others have chosen. In your time, move to one of the other locations. Place yourself in your own way. Continue visiting the locations The score ends when everyone is in the same location as each other |
Settings Performed
NO TALKING! In small group(s) of 4/5 find a setting outside the studio - setting is agreed upon by group in silence. Observe the setting for 10 minutes. Return to the studio and perform the setting. |
Clear Choices
All At any point within the dance each artist makes clear choices to ENTER, BE IN, BE STILL, EXIT. [Possible addendum: each artist must make each choice at least (or only?) once. Ends when everyone exits or everyone is still.] |
Joining in with the architecture
2 or more dancers Create a dance that specifically responds to the architecture (inside/outside). Score for wall and leaning
All The group forms a line/ cluster. When everyone is gathered the group approaches a wall. When you are quite close to the wall, in your own time, fall forward into the wall (using your hands to take your weight ) and, in your own time, push back to standing. Continue to fall and push back to standing in your own time. Pay attention to the play of the intervals of space/time between yourself and others. Use this as a starting point to continue on from… Melting
Find point 'A' then move to point 'B' and melt there: Repeat Eyes
Pick a person (another dancer or audience member).Maintain eye contact with them whilst performing a dance or telling them a story or both |
Landscape Score: Alternative Arrangements

You may remain for as long as you like in each position along the way.
When you have arrived in the other position either a) return to the start finding another way through or b) move from your ending position back to your original position

‘Clear’ Instructions
Everyone sits in a group facing the back. One person whispers to their neighbor 4 things that they are going to do e.g. roll, kick, slice, shift, swim, circle, slap, sink. Once they have passed on the message they get up and perform those things. The message is passed on and dance like ‘chinese whispers’. Development: Once everyone has danced the four actions everyone gets up and performs their phrase once again all together in the space. The Paper
One dancer gives an audience member a small piece of paper and a pen and asks them to write a word. This could be their favorite word or any word that they like. The dancer takes the paper, but doesn’t show it to anyone else. They then select any number of other dancers to join them. The ‘knowing’ dancer does a dance based on the word and the others follow their vibe. The dance is over when the knowing dancer places the word on the floor face up Optional end: The knowing dancer gives the piece of paper to a member of the audience (not the same person that wrote the word). They might choose to pass it on around the audience. |
5 minutes solo
Anyone at any time announces : ‘5’ - to which one person would begin a 5 minutes solo. The soloist is responsible to keep an eye on time.

Inner / outer director
A group of people begin. One of them is an inside director. The director may give instructions, shaping the group’s activity as follows: “Stop”, “Start”, “Continue”, “End”, “New beginning”, “Rearrange”, “Reset”, “Exit” (name the person/s to exit), “Enter” (name the person/s to enter).
* Options: the instructions: New beginning, Rearrange, Reset, Enter/Exit are only possible after ‘Stop’ and followed by ‘Continue’ or ‘Start’ - making it necessary for the group to hold a tableau in between these changes. ** Rearrange = new configuration. Reset = dissolving and recreating same configuration Sound/Movement On/Off
At anytime, anyone can turn the sound on or off. When sound is on, the movers are in stillness, when the sound is off, movers are engaged in making. |
Joining in
One begins. One by one people enter to join in with what is happening. This is not necessarily a unison or flocking. Anyone can enter/exit at any time. The aim is to strengthen what is already happening. |
Beginning.........end
Begin with all dancers outside the designated performance space. One or more dancers enter the space and dance until an outside witness calls 'end.' A moment of stillness. The performers exit. Begin again - new sequence, new configuration of dancers |
Camera/Lens
A dancer (A) finds the perfect/ideal place to start. He/she begins to create a solo. Another dancer (B) moves in to respond to the solo using a specific part of his/her body as a camera/lens 'filming' the solo. Dancer B may shift camera/lens to another body part. Filming can include close-up's, long shots, pans, still frames. Possible developments: - another dancer takes the place of the soloist - another dancer takes the place of the camera/lens - additional dancers enter and respond as cameras/lenses thus filming the solo from different perspectives/angles - additional dancers enter and begin their own solos with one camera/lens filming more than one solo - several solos+camera/lens performances happens simultaneously - and ?... |
